Sesame seeds are mixed into the porcelain slip and then poured into the plaster mold. The seeds create a random pattern within the clay. During the first firing, the seeds burn away, leaving behind small pockets in the surface. When glazed, these pockets fill with glaze, forming small glass pools across the surface of the porcelain object where the light travels through.
